History of Heineken Beer

 

Heineken, a globally renowned brand, has its origins in 1864

This year, Gerard Adriaan Heineken founded a small brewery in Amsterdam, called “De Hooiberg” (The Haystack). Gerard’s vision to produce superior quality beer using innovative brewing techniques has led to rapid expansion and considerable success. In 1873, he bought a larger brewery in Amsterdam, which became the foundation of today’s Heineken brand.

 

Innovation has been a key element in Heineken’s history

In 1875, Heineken won the Gold Medal at the International Maritime Exhibition and, in a short time, became the largest exporter of beer in France. In 1889, the new pure pilsner beer won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition, consolidating its international reputation.

 

Heineken has always been known for its commitment to quality

The brewing process takes eight days, and the maturation takes six weeks, much longer than average quality beer. In 1963, the company institutionalized its quality control efforts under Heineken Technisch Beheer (H.T.B.), which provided laboratory services, raw material research, project engineering and other services for all of the company’s associated breweries.

 

The expansion and globalization of Heineken

Heineken’s global expansion began at the end of the 19th century, establishing a presence in neighboring countries such as Belgium and France, before venturing further afield. The company entered the United States market in 1933, immediately after the end of Prohibition, and gradually expanded its global footprint through strategic acquisitions, partnerships and investments in breweries. Today, Heineken operates breweries and has a strong market presence in over 170 countries.
