What is rum?

Rum is a wonderful alcoholic distillate obtained from fermented sugar cane juice, with an alcohol concentration of 37% to 40%.

The areas with the largest production of rum are the Caribbean and America, but also the Philippines or India.

Rum is classified into several categories: light ones are used for cocktails, while “golden” or “black” (dark) rums are consumed as such or used for to cook Premium rum is generally designed to be consumed as such.

How to describe the type of rum depends on the location where it was produced, and the most commonly used terms to describe types of rum are:

Dark: They have a particular color, brown, black or red, belonging to classes darker than golden rums and are made from caramelized sugar or molasses . They are usually aged longer, in heavily charred barrels, thus having much stronger flavors than other types of rum. Also, dark rum is most often used in cooking. Most dark rums come from areas like Jamaica or Haiti.

Flavored: They are infused with fruit flavors such as banana, mango, orange, pineapple, coconut, star flower or linden, generally having a concentration of less than 40% and are usually combined in tropical drinks served with lots of ice. Often, these types of rum have added various chemicals that stimulate the tastes of the food.

Aurii: They are rums aged in wooden barrels, usually from charred white oak, they have a stronger aroma and taste than light rum and are maybe consider it halfway between light and dark rums.

Light: These are light rums, sometimes called “silver” or “white”, they have very little flavor and are sometimes filtered after aging to remove any color. Most light rums are produced in Puerto Rico and are popular for their use in mixed drinks such as Mojito or Daiquiri.

Premium: These are rums that are part of a special market category, being generally brands that can be sold in specialized premium stores and are generally consumed as such.

Spiced: Spiced rums get their flavors by adding spices and sometimes caramel, most of which are dark in color. Added spices include cinnamon, rosemary or pepper.
