How to plan a punch for a party
A few rules make every one of these Halloween punch ideas work better.
- Count about three small cups per guest. A 4-litre bowl gives roughly 20 cups of 200 ml.
- Chill everything first. Cold juice and soda need less ice, so the punch stays strong instead of turning watery.
- Use one big block of ice. Freeze water in a loaf tin or a bundt tin overnight. A big block melts far more slowly than cubes. For a spooky touch, freeze fruit, or a clean plastic glove filled with juice, into it.
- Add fizz last. Pour in ginger ale, soda or sparkling wine right before serving, and stir once, gently.
- Taste before the party. Sherbet and juice vary in sweetness, so adjust with lime or lemon juice.
1. Green goblin punch
This is the classic bright-green party punch, and it is popular because it is simple. In the bowl, scoop 1 litre of lime sherbet. Pour over 1.5 litres of chilled pineapple juice and the juice of 4 limes, then top with 1 litre of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. The sherbet melts into a foamy, cloudy top that looks like a cauldron.
For adults: stir 350 ml of vodka or white rum into a separate bowl of the same punch. Vodka keeps the flavour clean; white rum adds a tropical note.
2. Orange pumpkin punch
Mix 1.5 litres of orange juice, 1 litre of pineapple juice and the juice of 2 lemons. Add 750 ml of chilled ginger ale and a scoop or two of orange sherbet. Float thin orange slices on top, with a few cloves pushed into the peel for a pumpkin-patch smell.
For adults: add 350 ml of spiced or dark rum. Dark rum and orange go together well, and the same idea is the base of our Jack-o'-Lantern Punch, a spiced rum and apple punch with clove, nutmeg and citrus. Browse more rum recipes if you like it.
3. Blood-red punch with lychee eyeballs
Combine 1 litre of cranberry juice, 750 ml of pomegranate juice and 500 ml of red grape juice, with the juice of 2 limes. Chill, then top with 750 ml of sparkling water or ginger ale just before serving.
For the eyeballs, drain a tin of lychees, push a blueberry into the hole of each one, and float them in the bowl.
For adults: replace the sparkling water with chilled sparkling wine, or add 300 ml of vodka.
4. Halloween jungle juice
"Jungle juice" is a big-batch party drink with many juices and several spirits. It is easy to make too strong, so use these proportions and taste it.
- 700 ml vodka
- 350 ml white rum
- 1 litre pineapple juice
- 1 litre orange juice
- 500 ml cranberry juice
- 500 ml lemon-lime soda, added last
- Chopped oranges, apples and berries
Pour everything except the soda into the bowl, add the fruit and chill for a few hours. This recipe comes to roughly 9% alcohol by volume, about as strong as a strong beer, so serve it in small cups and offer plenty of water and food. Never leave it unlabelled.
5. Hot spiced cider punch
For a cold evening, heat 2 litres of apple cider, or cloudy apple juice, with 4 cinnamon sticks, 6 cloves, a few strips of orange peel and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Simmer gently for 15 minutes, without boiling, and keep it warm in a slow cooker.
For adults: add a measure of dark rum, brandy or Irish whiskey to each cup, rather than to the pot, so everyone chooses their own strength.
6. Purple potion punch
Brew 1 litre of strong, cold butterfly pea flower tea, which is naturally blue, and mix it with 1 litre of white grape juice and the juice of 3 lemons. The acid turns the blue to purple as you stir it in, which makes a good party trick. Top with soda.
For adults: add vodka or gin.
Using dry ice safely
Dry ice gives a punch bowl its rolling fog, and it is searched for a lot. It is also extremely cold, about minus 78 °C, so it needs care.
- Use food-grade dry ice, handle it with tongs or thick gloves, and never touch it with bare hands.
- Do not put pellets in the drink or in anyone's glass. Place a small bowl of dry ice inside, or under, the punch bowl, so the fog rises but the ice never touches the liquid people drink.
- Never swallow it, and keep it away from young children. Food regulators have warned about this: the Association of Food and Drug Officials, a US group of food and drug regulators, notes that dry ice can cause frostbite and that carbon dioxide can build up in closed spaces.
- Use it in a ventilated room, and never store it in a sealed container or a car, because the gas expands as it warms up.
If you are unsure, skip it: a good garnish does most of the work.
Make-ahead and serving tips
Most Halloween punch ideas are easy to prepare early. You can mix the juices a day ahead and keep them in the fridge. Add the sherbet, the ice and the fizz at the last minute. Keep a ladle and a stack of cups next to the bowl, and put a small card in front of each bowl saying what is in it and whether it contains alcohol.
Not everyone is drinking, and many of these Halloween punch ideas work as well without alcohol: see our guide to non-alcoholic Halloween punch.
